It is estimated that as many as 4 million children in the U.S. have dyscalculia, which is 1-2 children out of a class of 30. Dyscalculia is a severe learning disability inherited from parents, and there is no cure. However, promising research, including that conducted by the American Institute for Dyscalculia Research's founder, Dr. R. S. Woods, PhD has shown that there are promising techniques that can significantly improve a persons ability to understate and do mathematics. This disability affects mostly children of color in lower socioeconomic status. U.S schools are supposed to diagnose and treat such disabilities, but their record of actually doing so is less than ideal. There is much research to be completed in to get lawmakers, medical and educational professionals to do more.
